Fed Lowers Interest Rates for Second Instance This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank lowered borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second reduction this year during economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement notes. “Price increases has risen and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed usually analyzes BLS data to determine labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs created to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of positions added to the economy in the summer month was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was set to publish last month’s job market report in early October, it halted its publication when the shutdown began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated recently, which he had earlier attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are rising, although gradually. Prices increased 3% over the last year, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
